A couple of months ago, I started seeing something new on Mayor Javier Gonzales’ Facebook page – something about beginning a new tradition in Santa Fe. There were teasers and then more info, and finally, we are only a few days away from New Year’s Eve on the Santa Fe Plaza. I’m pumped.
Regardless of your politics, Gonzales has proven to be an innovative, fun, and interesting Mayor, and it’s obvious he loves his job. Creating a community event like this only cements my admiration for how he serves us in that role.
The copy provided by the City of Santa Fe regarding this event is so good, I’m just going to quote it here:
“Round up your family and friends to lift your spirits in welcoming a New Year to the City Different. Be among the first to usher in 2016 at the inaugural Santa Fe, New Mexico, New Year’s Celebration on the Santa Fe Plaza. Festivities start at 9:30 with bonfires lining the Plaza and hot chocolate available for purchase from a local nonprofit that benefits Santa Fe Kids.”
My buddy Alex Maryol, a Santa Fe treasure and amazing musician, will be playing, as well as Lumbre del Sol “to feed the soul and keep the night alive on the bandstand.”
At 11:45, Mayor Javier and other city officials will begin the countdown to 2016. and then, “At the stroke of midnight, a City Different New Year’s surprise will kick off 2016 in an uplifting and family-friendly fashion as a new tradition is born in America’s oldest capital city.”
I can’t wait. This is exactly why I live in Santa Fe – despite it’s size, it still feels like a very friendly, fun small town, especially at events like this. See you there?
