About Santa Fe High School
School’s Mission:
The Mission of Santa Fe High School in partnership with its community is to challenge our students with a visionary, innovative and positive learning environment that is provided by high quality, dedicated, caring individuals, so that each student will develop life long learning skills, values and knowledge to become a self-reliant, positive contributor to our democratic society and the world.
School’s Vision:
Santa Fe High celebrates learning in a respectful, diverse and safe environment where all are engaged and accountable for academic and social growth.
Founded in 1899, Santa Fe High School is the oldest of the three high schools in Santa Fe Public Schools, and is the largest comprehensive high school in northern New Mexico. Santa Fe High was originally located in downtown Santa Fe, near the historic Plaza. In 1966, Santa Fe Senior High, initially grades 11 and 12, moved from the downtown campus to our current location on a high plateau at intersections of Siringo and Yucca roads. Sophomores were relocated to the ‘new’ Santa Fe Senior High campus three years later. Freshmen continued attending Santa Fe Mid High at the downtown campus until 1976. In 1977, the downtown campus was completely closed and freshmen began attending the ‘unified’ Santa Fe Mid/Senior High campus where we are presently located.
In 1971 the Vocational High School opened on the southern portion of the new Santa Fe High campus as a separate/alternative educational setting. The Vocational High School provided specialized training to students in 25 different fields. Today, what remains from the Vocational High School is known as our South Campus.
The Santa Fe High campus underwent a major renovation from the late 1990’s to 2005; resulting in the construction of several new buildings and the remodeling of most others.
Santa Fe High School serves about 1,500 students from a diverse range of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. Seven hundred thirty-two students are male and seven hundred twenty-two are female. Sixty percent of our student body is Hispanic, thirty-four percent are Anglo, three percent are Native American, two percent are Asian, and one percent is African American.
Our student population by grade level is:
Ninth: 521 Tenth: 405 Eleventh: 286 Twelfth: 245
In 2010, SFHS replaced its six period traditional bell schedule with a hybrid 7 period block schedule. This schedule change was made to better meet the needs of our students and to provide a common collaborative period for our teachers. Starting with freshmen that began at Santa Fe High in 2009-2010; students are required to take:
Also for students entering the ninth grade beginning in the 2009-2010 school year, at least one of the credits required for graduation shall be earned in an Advanced Placement or Honors course, a Dual Credit course or a Distant Learning course. Santa Fe High School has a vibrant Advanced Placement program. The Advanced Placement (AP) program is a curriculum in the United States and Canada sponsored by the College Board which offers standardized courses to high school students that are generally recognized to be equivalent to undergraduate courses in college. Participating colleges grant credit to students who obtained high enough scores on the exams to qualify.
Santa Fe offers the following courses as part of our 2011-2012 AP program:
